Ironstone china is a strong, dense and durable earthenware. It is made from clay which is mixed with a powdered glassy slag. This type of china gives a metallic ring when flicked with a fingernail. First the patterns are transfer printed onto the piece before being glazed. Each piece is then hand painted with bright enamels and edged in 22 carat gold. Ironstone was first patented in 1813 by Charles Mason, a Staffordshire potter, as a cheaper alternative to porcelain that could be mass produced. Mason's signature rich colours of cobalt blue, red and gold are shown on the items we have for sale in the design Mandalay in the blue colourway. All items are in perfect condition and do not appear to have ever been used. |
