We were told that this writing slope, c1790, was once owned by a general in the Duke of Wellington’s army; however, we have not had this substantiated. The box is made from mahogany and has a beautiful tortoise shell and mother of pearl inlay on the lid. It comes complete with a working lock and key however, one of the hinges needs replacing. As you open the box there is a removable tray under which there is a leather writing slope, inkwell with a bottle of ink and some pen nibs. Also included is a Georgian Sealing Set containing wax balls, a ladle for melting the wax plus a seal depicting a shamrock. It is a rare find and all comes in very good condition. |
